Mounting for the Baseplate can be done in several different ways. It is not recommended to mount a baseplate directly to the kayak without some intermediate mounting. Direct mounting will mean the baseplate will take all the force should the downrod contact underwater obstacles. Thus it is likely that the baseplate itself will break or tear screws out of the kayak. The nylon Thumbscrews that hold the assembly together act as a replacable strain relief and so it is strongly recommended that some form of mounting be used. If mounting on a Hobie tube (Hrail), the square and round tube clamp work very well. Most Kayaks will have a Tnut Track system that uses T nuts, then select the sub plate with T nuts. And finally if you just have a flat spot and wish to mount directly to the kayak, the sub plate works best. These mountings allow for the baseplate to be quickly removed using 2 thumbscrews. If you intend to use a Ram Ball set to mount the baseplate, you need no mounting at all and can just secure the Ram Ball to the bottom of the baseplate directly. So do not select a mounting below.
